(Beacon) - On Monday, January 9, 2007 Beacon Mayor Clara Lou Gould swore in the new executive committee of the Southern Dutchess Chapter of the NAACP. Outgoing President Ralph Middleton described the new board as a dynamic group of individuals who are bringing a new vision and new energy to the local chapter that will re-establish the
Southern Dutchess Chapter of the NAACP as a vital community organization that will serve to bring people together to act upon issues that are of concern to all.
Although the passage of the Civil Rights act has increased individual freedom, there remain institutional structures that re-produce inequalities in education, income, occupational opportunities, legal and juridical services, and healthcare. Because these inequalities are institutionalized they are the most difficult to address and change. The Southern Dutchess Chapter of the NAACP will work to promote needed change and make the idea of equality a reality and to create equality in “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” which the constitution states are the inalienable rights of everyone. We wish to promote the idea that no person be left behind. Kevin Cromer Esq. states that our goal is to become a true source of help and support for all within our community.
The New Executive Board expounded upon these goals at their first General meeting of the New Year on Tuesday, January 16th. The Southern Dutchess Chapter of the NAACP includes the following towns: Wappinger Falls, Beacon, Fishkill Hopewell junction, East Fishkill, Pawling, Cold Springs and Peekskill.
