Darryl C. Towns Receives New Appointment


(Albany) - The members of the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative Caucus elected a new slate of officers, including the selection of Assemblyman Darryl C. Towns, of Brooklyn, as its new Chairman. Assemblyman Towns was born and raised in the 54th Assembly district where his leadership style could be characterized as a coalition builder and visionary. He hopes to bring these same qualities to bear as he assumes the reigns Caucus. “It is vitally important to retain the lessons of the past, which will enable us to tackle challenges of the future,” said Assemblyman Towns.

The State Caucus has a rich history of battles fought, lost and won, “The Caucus has been a vital component of the State Legislature since its creation in 1966. From the onset, the Caucus’ main goal has been to unite African American, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislators as a powerful agent of change. We strive to be an effective political alliance that consistently gives all minorities, middle-class, the poor and the working poor, a real voice in government,” remarked Chairman Towns.

Currently, Caucus members represent close to one third of the Assembly majority conference and hold the most significant leadership roles in the New York State Senate minority, including the Lt. Governor position. Chairman Towns stated, “I look forward to working with Assembly leadership as we craft meaningful legislation with our new top executive, Governor Spitzer and his very able Lt. Governor, David Paterson.”

The new slate of officers is as follows: Chairman, Darryl C. Towns; First Vice-chair, Assemblyman N. Nick Perry; Second Vice-chair, Assemblyman William Scarborough; Third; e-chair, Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples; Secretary, Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson; Treasurer, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook; Parliamentarian, Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz and Chaplain, Assemblywoman Aurelia Greene.
