Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that Hudson Valley Congressman John Hall has been named to the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. Hall’s appointment was among a number of second committee assignments approved by the House Democratic Steering Committee for freshmen Members. Hall said he pushed hard for the assignment because he intends to be an aggressive advocate for veterans in Washington.
“One of my top priorities is to be a strong voice for veterans in our nation’s capital, to make sure every veteran receives the respect and the benefits he or she has earned,” said Hall. “I wanted very much to be on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee in order to work from the strongest platform possible on behalf of the veterans in the Hudson Valley and throughout the country.”
The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs is in charge of examining all legislation pertinent to veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Veterans’ issues regarding health care, disability compensation, GI bill education and job training, home loan guarantees, life insurance policies and a nationwide system of veteran’ cemeteries are all under the committee’s purview.
“Veterans deserve to receive the care they need and have their medical, economic and housing problems resolved,” said Hall. “We have a long way to go in fulfilling the promises our country makes to veterans when they volunteer to serve, and I look forward to working with my colleagues on the Committee to make sure the government does a better job of keeping those promises.”
The 19th Congressional District is home to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Montrose and Castle Point VA health care facilities, and the Marine and Air National Guard sites at Stewart International Airport. Almost 50,000 veterans live in the 19th Congressional District, and more than 155,000 in the Hudson Valley.
The committee’s new chairperson, Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA), visited the 19th CD in October and campaigned for Hall.
Hall’s first appointment was to the House Committee on Transportation & Infrastructure.
