(Goshen) - The Orange County Human Rights Commission will be hosting its 12th Annual Human Rights Award Dinner this spring and is once again inviting the public’s assistance as it seeks candidates for its Human Rights Awards.
Honorees will be selected by the Commission in January based upon criteria which includes: made a significant contribution to advance human rights and eliminate discrimination in the county, helped to build better relationship among people and encourage all to participate in community life on an equal bases, sought to foster mutual respect and understanding among individuals of different races or national origins and/or sought to relieve tension and conflict between diverse groups.
“The attention and work that an individual or group brings to human rights is critical to creating communities that value and respect the dignity of all individuals,” said Christine Sadowski, Commission chair.
Nominees must either reside or work in Orange County and may be from any field, including, but not limited to: local community based leadership, education, law enforcement, public service, human services, industry, small and large business and not-for-profit agencies.
The deadline for nominations is December 15th. Nomination forms can be obtained by calling the Human Rights office at 291-2191. Entries should be mailed to the Human Rights office at 30 Matthews St., Suite 202A, Goshen, NY 10924.
Last year’s recipients included: The Newburgh Ministry, Pamela Resch, The Reverend Emma Bogran, Nolly Climes, The Reverend William Scafidi and Orange & Rockland Utilities.
The Commission’s primary objectives are fostering mutual respect and understanding among all racial, religious and nationality groups in the county as well as furthering understanding of the rights of women, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Commission members are: Dr. Roberto Calderin, Nolly Climes, Wanda Vionet Cruz, Curlie Dillard, Chris Farlekas, Preston Felton, Kathleen Francese, Peg Jeffries, Dr. Hubert Lee and Christine Sadowski.
