The toys are collected by the U.S. Marine Reserve and distributed to needy children. Only new and unwrapped toys may be deposited into the boxes. Used toys may not be used.
The incentive for the installation of the boxes at Town Hall came from the Town of Newburgh Republican Committee. George Tompkins, a long time member, urged the Committee to collect the toys. They will be presented to the Marines at the annual holiday party on December 20. Tompkins is chair of the project.
Another spearhead of the project both on the Republican Committee and on the Town Council has been Betty Greene. She noted that Toys for Tots receptacles had previously been a Christmas time tradition in the lobby of Newburgh Town Hall, but were abolished by a previous administration. She is overjoyed that the project has been resurrected.
Instrumental in the project also has been Town Supervisor Wayne C. Booth, himself a former Marine
