Women's Cross Country Bows To Navy In Annual Star Match

Sophomores Meghan Curran and Roxanne Wegman were the first two Army runners to cross the finish line, placing third and fourth, respectively, but all five Navy runners grabbed the first seven spots en route to a 21-38 victory over the Black Knights in the annual "Star" match.

Navy's Justine Whipple ran away with the meet, clocking a time of 22 minutes, 15.13 seconds over the 6,000-meter layout, while teammate Emily Castro battled Army's Curran to the finish line for the runner-up spot. Castro crossed in 22:54.33, nipping Curran who followed in 22:55.47.

Wegman was a close fourth in 23:00.36, but Navy captured the next three spots to put the win in the books, snapping Army's five meet win streak.

"It was nip and tuck throughout the meet between Navy's Castro along with Meghan (Curran) and Roxanne (Wegman)," commented Army men's head coach Jerry Quiller. "They battled each other throughout the day, and Castro outkicked our runners in front of a host of Navy supporters.

"We are young and short on depth, but we have a good group coming back next year."

Andrea Edgar was the third Black Knight runner to cross the finish line, placing eighth overall with a clocking of 23:26.35.

Junior Kirsten Dawson placed 13th overall with a time of 23:51.96, while freshmen Jayna Tangen (24:02.84) and Ashley Morgan (24:12.58) finished 16th and 18th, respectively.

Junior Megan Howell rounded out the Black Knights' Top 7, placing 19th overall with a clocking of 24:25.35.

Army's next meet is slated for Oct. 28, when the Black Knights will trek to Hamilton, N.Y., for the Patriot League Championships
