The Newburgh Enlarged City School District held its “Annual Secondary Spelling Bee” recently in the North Junior High School Auditorium. Seventh and eight grade student finalists from spelling bees held in the district’s three junior high schools participated in the event. Among the words that proved most difficult to spell were “barbecue” “aptitude,” “millennium,“ “occult” and “acculturation.“
This year’s 7th grade “Annual Secondary Spelling Bee” winners include, in 3rd place, Kelsey Craig from Heritage Junior High School ; in 2nd place, Brianna Levy from North Junior High School ; and in 1st place, Chris Mendez from Heritage Junior High School .
Eight grade winners include, in 3rd place, Annie McCurdy from North Junior High School ; in 2nd place, Jeremy Muller from Heritage Junior High School ; and in 1st place, Sophia Conti from South Junior High School. Sophia Conti was named “District Champion.” She will represent the district at the Orange-Ulster BOCES Spelling Contest in March.
