Newburgh School’s Will Be Ready To Open

(Newburgh) - While there is still a little bit of summer left before students have to return to school, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Annette Saturnelli is ensuring parents and students alike that school will open as scheduled (Sept 5).

With all of the construction projects currently underway at nine of the 14 buildings in the school district, unfounded rumors sprung to life that school may be opening late this year. “School will open on time,” said Robert Beemer, Superintendent of BBL Construction Services.

Dr. Saturnelli attributes that to the long hours put into the planning of the projects and the excellent team she’s working with. “Every bid came in within budget,” she said, “it takes careful planing to make this a success.”

This year’s work includes classroom additions at the New Windsor School, nearly four acres of roof replacement at Newburgh Free Academy and transforming the Wood Shop and Print Shop into NFA’s third cafeteria, which is slated to be complete mid-October.

Other projects include roof replacement and a new gym floor at Horizons-on-Hudson, completely rebuilding the main entrance at Meadow Hill School and repaving the parking lots. The roofs are being replaced at Fostertown ETC Magnet School and South Junior High School.

Last Summer roofs were replaced at Meadow Hill, Temple Hill and North Junior High School as part of the $50 million bond for critical and urgent repairs and renovations of district facilities passed in February 2005. During the summer of 2007, work will be done at Gidney Avenue Memorial School, Gardnertown School, Vails Gate School, the pre-K Center, and Heritage Junior High School. By the opening of school in September ‘07, all of the projects included in the bond will be complete.

“We have been able to accomplish a great deal with the $50 million taxpayers voted to spend on their school district,” said Dr. Saturnelli. District representatives said they spent about $8 million last summer, $32 million this summer.
