Habitat Newburgh Breaks Ground

On August 7th, The William and Elaine Kaplan Family Charitable Foundation and Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh officially broke ground on 79 Monument Street in Newburgh. This house not only marks the new beginning for another Habitat family, but it celebrates the beginning of a new partnership between these two organizations. 79 Monument St. is the first of four houses that will be sponsored by the Kaplan Family Foundation over the next three and a half years. “This is our very first foundation grant, and just knowing that we have the support of a foundation such as the Kaplan Foundation for the next four years has given us tremendous courage to move on and move on faster,” said Deirdre Glenn, Executive Director of Habitat Newburgh.
William Kaplan, co-founder of A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts, has been an unquestionably prominent figure in the City of Newburgh for years. With a dream of revitalizing Newburgh and a great philanthropic spirit, his generosity has helped countless non-profit organizations, such as St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, Hospice of Orange & Sullivan Counties, Mount Saint Mary College, SUNY Orange and now Habitat for Humanity of Greater Newburgh.
“The common goal of all these entities has been – regardless of their mission —to make Newburgh a better place to live, a better place to work, and a better place to raise a family. Habitat has fit right into that structure,” said Vincent Mazzie, board member of the Kaplan Foundation.
When the speeches were finished, several members of both boards picked up their golden shovels and commemorated their new partnership and celebrated their commitment to eliminating poverty housing in Newburgh.
